Material Selection Policy

It is the purpose of the Library is to provide materials which serve the informational, cultural, recreational and creative needs of the Stockton/Cassadaga area population is serves. The library will not practice censorship and is dedicated to preserving the free expression of ideas. The Board of Trustees has adopted the American Library Association’s Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read statement.

Selection procedures will rely on published reviews and on the judgment of the library staff, taking into account the needs of area patrons. In selecting materials, consideration will be given to the contribution they make to the education of the reader, the aesthetic and practical value to the existing library collection.

The library will provide suitable books and other materials for children and adolescents. These will be kept separate from the adult collection. All materials will be kept on open shelves, except for those in poor condition, irreplaceable and extremely rare.

With regards to gifts and unsolicited materials, before they shall be considered for permanent inclusion in the library collection, they shall be evaluated in light of the above policies.
